Black History Month @ Nourish Hub

Black History Month is always a special time for reflection, celebration, and connection within our community. We welcome members of all communities to Nourish Hub and want to celebrate the diversity of culture and heritage that this brings.

This year, we are honouring Black authors, poets, artists, and community members as we come together as colleagues, residents, and neighbours.

Kicking Off the Month: Shared Reading

Championing Black authors and poets is about more than simply appreciating great literature, it’s about amplifying voices and experiences that have too often been underrepresented or overlooked. During October, we discussed Derek Walcott, Maya Angelou and Lemn Sissay. On the 17th October, we were joined by Mayor Sharon Holder and read Childhood Home, a poem by Lemn Sissay about his experience of being in the care as a child.

Reader Leader Sharon Spencer remarks:

Black writers bring powerful perspectives on identity, resilience, joy, and history that deepen our collective understanding of the world. And our Shared Reading sessions allows us to connect not just with the text, but with each other — fostering empathy, awareness, and a stronger sense of community across cultures”.

Mayor of Hammersmith and Fulham, Sharon Holder said:

What Nourish Hub is doing is so powerful – bringing people together, supporting healthy, affordable eating, rescuing food waste, and offering learning and skills that uplift our community. These aren’t just nice ideas: they change lives, build confidence, and create stronger neighbourhoods.

Sharing poems, stories, conversation – these are the moments that remind us of our shared humanity and help us understand each other better. Thank you to the volunteers, staff, and residents who make this place full of warmth, welcome, and possibility.”

Black History Month (BHM) Champions take the lead @ our Community Supper

On 19th October, our BHM champions hosted an extra special community supper, with performances from local independent artists and an Afro-Caribbean menu designed by our champions and Floor Manager Celina. The event was an outstanding success, connecting people across generations, backgrounds and bringing our community together.

St Lucian Bakes, Courgette Fritters, Stewed Peas with Rice and Honey-glazed Plantain, Baked Mushroom and Peppers as well as a Jamaican Ginger Cake covered in toffee sauce and ginger ice-cream were on the menu.

The night started with an introduction from Helen and chef Celina, followed by music from Debbie (Pan Diva, a steel pan vocalist), poem from Valarie Aird (local resident) and an Afro-beats dance performed by Khadidja (Cheri Coco, local dance school) between the main course and dessert.

Lateef, a guest in attendance said:

I wanted to extend my sincere gratitude for the wonderful evening dedicated to Black History Month. It truly was a memorable event.

A special thank you to Celina, Helen, and all the staff and volunteers for your hard work and dedication. The event not only allowed us to learn and reflect but also helped us connect and engage with our community in such a meaningful way.”

Thank you to everyone that helped organise our events, everyone who has attended Nourish Hub to celebrate with us and

Every winter, as temperatures drop and heating bills rise, too many people across the UK face a stark choice: heat or eat. The Warm Welcome campaign was founded in response to the UK’s cost-of-living and fuel crisis. From its beginnings as a seasonal initiative, it has become a nationwide movement of thousands of community venues; from libraries to cafés, churches to community centres.
