Shining a spotlight on: Ruby

Ruby 5

Ruby came to Nourish Hub on a 6-week work experience placement through Pursuing Independent Paths, an adult learning support programme designed to facilitate education and social skills in order to find employment. Having always aspired to work in hospitality, Ruby grabbed the opportunity to gain some experience at Nourish Hub and was thrilled to join the volunteer team. As a 23-year-old woman on the autism spectrum there are challenges that come from looking for work, but Ruby understood that volunteering is a great opportunity to gaining the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to make the most out of her chosen career.

Andreea, Nourish Hub’s Deputy Manager said, ‘When Ruby first started with us as a volunteer, we knew she had huge potential. She was keen to learn and eager to get started. However, as someone who didn’t find it easy to talk to people she didn’t know, or to engage in activities she hadn’t done before, we worked closely with her to make sure she felt supported and comfortable as she learnt about being customer-facing.’

Working with our Front of House team, Ruby quickly took to the tasks given to her, remembering what to do and how to do it, with minimal input from the staff and volunteer team. Throughout this role her confidence really shone through. Getting to know people was daunting at first but it’s safe to say that she is one of the team! Now that she feels confident, Ruby can be found chatting to residents and answering their questions with ease.

Ruby’s journey at Nourish Hub has been helped by a supportive work environment. Her progress highlights have shown how practical experience of volunteering can increase confidence, independence, and skill development. Ruby’s work experience placement at Nourish Hub has been a successful one and Ruby has expressed her enjoyment in the support she has provided.
